Everyone needs a coach.
Think about your favorite athlete or performer to understand this point. Do you think they were able to reach the top of their game completely on their own?
While there is no denying that famous athletes and other performers have underlying talents, it would’ve been impossible for them to achieve their level of success without a coach to guide their abilities in the right direction. So why then do business professionals look over coaching as a method to help guide their business in the right direction?
Maybe it’s because of all the self-proclaimed guides and gurus out there that don’t really know what they’re doing. Yes, bad people exist out there, but they don’t negate the truth that everyone does indeed need a coach if they want to become their best.
To help you make the right choice in finding a business coach, I put together a list to not only help you find a genuine coach but a coach that’s right for you.
Start with a self-audit. You can do this by making a T-chart with what you’re good at on one side, and what you want to improve on the other. This simple exercise will help you uncover areas of personal growth and further clarify what you can gain from seeking out a business coach.
Consider your team in this as well. What do you hope they will gain from this process? Where do you see areas of improvement?
Once you have your needs outlined, start digging around online to find a coach who’s skills and background can help you achieve your goals. LinkedIn is especially great for this, as resumes and peer endorsements are all localized on this platform.
Also, try checking out YouTube to see the coach in action. Videos will give you a peek into their coaching style, speaking ability, and personality. This is a way to ensure that a prospective coach is someone you can get along with and trust with your vulnerabilities.
An authentic coach, not just some “guru”, will tailor a plan that is unique to you. When you are narrowing down your choices, watch out for people with numbered, step-by-step processes that leave no room for your specific needs.
Again, a real coach will guide you along with actionable steps and realistic goals that are personal to you.
You now have a start on how to find a business coach to help you get ahead. Let me know how your journey goes and what criteria you used to find someone right for your business!
