Wow. A year ago, almost to the day, I stated that life rarely presents you with a 2nd opportunity. Incredibly, Jordan Spieth finds himself in exactly the same position. The question is… can he repeat history?
Imagine having the opportunity to do the same thing every year in attempting to perform at your best. Would we get it right first time, or would it take a number of years of trial and error before we made it?
This is exactly what The Masters golf competition provides the world’s elite golfers every year and it is what sets it apart from any other golf competition. Unlike other major championships, the Masters is held each year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia providing a comforting sense of familiarity for both player and viewer and a known yardstick for all to measure against. Bar the odd tweak, it provides the same setting, the same set up, the same holes, and the same amazing azaleas bordering the immaculate fairways and greens, and of course the same coveted green jacket – more prized than any golfing trophy in the world. To don the green jacket is to announce to the world you’ve made it. To do it several times gives you immortality in the world of golf.
And yet, such is the poise and display put on by Jordan Spieth, he is on the verge of achieving this in only his 2nd Masters. He’s already broken records at this year’s tournament and they haven’t even started the weekend’s play. However, the BIG question now lingers around the world whether he can hold it together. Can he keep doubt at bay and truly deliver on his obvious talent or will he succumb to the pressure of thinking ‘what might be’ and falter?
We can learn a real lesson here. We don’t have the luxury of repeat opportunities to have another go, so we’re at the mercy of our mind-set at our first attempt. Often, like the pro golfer, it’s not our ability to deliver in question, but in our ability to keep the doubts at bay – particular when we hit the odd bogie – and focusing on what we’re capable of, what we can achieve and the determination to realise our dream.
So even if we did have the chance to do it all again the following year, would it matter? After all, there are so many parameters involved, there isn’t a set formula – Bubba Watson’s unorthodox style has proved that.
So maybe we’re blessed in only having one shot at it. After all, rarely does life give you a second opportunity and even when it does, it doesn’t mean we’ll take it – just ask Johnny Miller, Roberto DeVicenzo or Greg Norman. So for any budding entrepreneurs out there, regardless if you’re a or rely more on natural instinct, don’t let fear paralyse or thwart your dreams and instead keep believing, trust the tools you’ve already got or gained and take the opportunity to become the Master of your dreams.
I, for one, can’t wait to see this young gun succeed.
