“Champions keep playing until they get it right”
Billie Jean King
I’ll admit, it was tempting to use Chat GPT rather than take the extra time to compose and articulate what I wanted to say in this month’s skimmer, especially in today’s age where our impatience is fueled by readily getting answers at our fingertips online. However, tennis provided me with a reminder of how we aim to play the game of life.
I was fortunate enough to win the ballot and see some amazing tennis on Centre Court at Wimbledon this year. As I sat there, I reflected that business is often similar to the back and forth of a tennis match and the fine margins between succeeding and losing and the points in between. Roger Federer reminded us of this at his recent brilliant speech at Dartmouth College, where he highlighted that “Effortless is a myth!” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqWUuYTcG-o
Roger’s wisdom provided a startling statistic – that he only won 54% of his points in his career! The truth is, we may only be a fraction off, just as Edison discovered thousands of times before finally inventing the lightbulb. Therefore, success is in the pursuit of excellence through the highs and lows of the journey, so remember the words of Billie Jean King in your endeavours. I wish you luck in maintaining your grit, your discipline and your confidence to succeed in whatever match you’re playing.

Harnessing the wind
Last week I was in Sweden where I got the chance to sail in Gothenburg’s archipelago (skärgård) with a seasoned skipper.
It is stunningly beautiful at this time of year but also extremely treacherous if you don’t know what you’re doing as there are submerged rocks, tricky tides and unpredictable waves that could leave you shipwrecked with one false move.
The essence of leadership is like harnessing the wind. It lies in the ability to see potential, adapt to changing circumstances, and lead with a vision that inspires and empowers others while successfully navigating a course through challenging terrain.
Business is no different, but this experience reminded me the key to success is in being humble enough to ask if you have acquired the right skills, competencies and team to harness the market before you attempt to navigate treacherous seas.
Inner Compass is a structured guide that flexes and customizes to your specific situation and helps clear the fog to reveal your true path. It provides a proven map that easily allows you to navigate your circumstances; sharing tools, techniques, and models as well as real-life case studies and anecdotes to illustrate how others have found their inner compass, aligned to their true north.
